Description

This panorama is part of a series of works I've done for the Capturing Change project, in collaboration with DeviantArt and SONY.

The objective is to document how a city changes and how we change with it.

THE PHOTO

From a small beach resort in the 1930s to what is now known as the Brazilian Dubai.

This region was a natural paradise, less than a hundred years ago. Now, the city took over. It's still a beautiful place for a week or two. But the city grew too fast, under weak laws and with little, if any, urban planning. The buildings overshadow the beach and the streets are chocked with traffic. At night, bars and parties flood the main strip and all the way to the edge of the ocean. It's impossible to get a good night sleep, despite the high prices of hotels. It's safe to said that after a couple weeks, you develop a love/hate relationship with the city. Although you'll always want to go back.

For Capturing Change, I wanted to go to this city, to have it representing the new metropolis. Its past is being buried under the high rise buildings. A price you pay for having a city grow too fast.

THE SHOOT

One of the things I immediately wanted to try with the SONY A7RII was creating a panoramic shot, using its 42+ megapixel exposures. The Cristo Luz, which is a viewpoint of the city with a Christ statue similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro, was the right place to go for such a picture.

I set up the tripod and camera in a large balcony to get the right angle for the full view. It was windy and raining, although the latter provided a nice effect for the city lights and also a darker background, where the ocean is. I did four long exposures to highlight the city lights and the challenge was getting the right color on the trees, because the Christ statue is lit with several colors, each staying on for just a bit. Gladly, there's white, so that's the one I had to wait for to get the exposure right.

For this picture, I have to thank ellenherbert for producing a credential so I could get to shoot there at any time, with no cost, and also the very kind Juliana de Souza, who works for the company in charge of the statue and everything around it, for arranging everything in just a couple of days and without hiccups. You should visit www.cristoluz.com.br to see this beautiful place.
